A brand of many talents
As the name suggests, the Bavarian Motor Works Company specialized in the manufacture of engines. When the it was founded in Bavaria in 1913, the company was initially called Rapp- Motorenwerke GmbH. At this time, the company was fabricating aircraft engines for the German Air Force and when BMW started so successfully with the production of railway engines and brakes, the company was bought and renamed Knorr Bremse AG. In 1922 the company was sold again and went back to producing aircraft engines under the name Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) until the name was changed back to BMW in the same year. And that is the brand we know and love today.
The legend of the BMW logo
The iconic BMW logo caused controversy for decades because a lot of people assumed it to depicts a rotating propeller. Given the fact that the company started as a producer of aircraft engines this makes perfect sense and even BMW used the rotating propeller in different commercial ads. BMW made little to no effort to correct this myth, but in truth, the BMW logo emerged from their initial company, the Rapp Motorwerke GmbH. And what appears to be a rotating airplane propeller, is just the Bavarian coat of arms in reverse.
