A name to fight for
August Horch’s first company, „August Horch & Cie.“, was founded in Cologne in 1899. Then in 1904, he founded the August Horch & Cie. Motorwagenwerke AG and the August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH in 1909. Due to the similar names, the partners filed suit for trademark infringement with the Federal Court of Justice and found that the Horch brand belonged to his previous company. For this reason, August Horch had create a new company name. So he sat down with close friends to brainstorm ideas when the son of his friend Franz, who was studying latin in the same room, came up with „Audi“, which is just the latin version of the German word „horch“.
The four rings
August Horch founded the „Audi Automobilwerke GmbH Zwickau“ under the brand new company name in 1910. In 1932, Audi merged with the car manufacturers DKW, Wanderer and even with their competitor from Horch to form Auto Union AG, which eventually became the Audi AG we know today. The four interlocking rings represent the four companies involved in the merger. Ironically, another trademark infringement lawsuit was filed by the Olympic Committee due to the similarity of their logos. This time, Audi won in court and was allowed to continue to use the four rings that can be seen on our Audi rental cars.
